Privacy Policy — Video Summaries for YouTube

Video Summaries for YouTube is built to respect your privacy. Here is exactly what it does, and does not do, with your data.

This extension is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by YouTube or Google LLC.

Summary (the short version)

Summarizing happens locally, in your browser. Video Summaries for YouTube condenses a video on your own device using a built-in extractive summarizer. There is no AI server, no account, and no analytics. Besides reading caption data from YouTube itself — the site you're already on — the extension's only outside contact is a plan check with ExtensionPay (ExtPay): an anonymous check of whether you are on the Free or Pro plan. It runs for everyone and sends no personal data. The paid upgrade is optional and is a one-time purchase, not a subscription (see Payments below). Your viewing and your summaries stay yours.

How it works

When you click "Summarize This Video," the extension reads the public caption/transcript track of the YouTube video you currently have open — the same transcript YouTube already serves to your browser. It condenses that text into key points on your device, in the moment. Each point is matched back to a timestamp so you can jump the player to that part of the video. The transcript is used only to build your summary and is never uploaded.

What data the Extension accesses and stores

The extension reads the transcript of the one video you choose to summarize. It does not read your watch history, your account, your comments, or any other site.

Everything the extension itself stores lives in your browser, via chrome.storage.local:

• Saved summaries you explicitly choose to save (the video title, the key points, and their timestamps).
• Your daily usage count, so the free tier's daily limit can be applied. Only the 7 most recent days of counts are kept; older entries are pruned the next time you summarize.
• Your settings, such as your preferred summary length.
• Your plan record (whether you are on Free or Pro), so the extension knows which features to enable.

The bundled ExtensionPay library additionally keeps its own small plan record (an anonymous identifier and install date) in your browser's extension storage. Unlike the extension's own data above — which stays on this device — this ExtensionPay record lives in Chrome's synced extension storage, so Chrome may sync it across browsers where you're signed in.

You can clear all of this at any time by removing the extension or clearing the extension's storage in your browser.

What the Extension does NOT do

• It does not transmit your transcripts, summaries, browsing data, or any personal information to us or to any third party.
• It has no AI server; the summarizer runs entirely on your machine.
• It has no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking.
• It does not read tabs or sites other than the YouTube video you ask it to summarize.
• It does not collect your name, email, or payment details (the optional payment provider handles those directly — see below).

Besides reading caption data from YouTube itself (the site you're already on) to build a summary, the only service the extension contacts is ExtensionPay (extensionpay.com), the payment provider: it keeps an anonymous identifier in your browser and checks your plan status (Free or Pro) with its server. This check runs for all users, including free ones, and sends no personal information — no email, no card details, nothing about the videos you watch, and none of your transcripts or summaries.

Payments (optional Pro)

The Pro upgrade is a one-time purchase, not a subscription — you pay once and it stays yours. Payments are handled by ExtensionPay (https://extensionpay.com), which uses Stripe for secure processing. If you buy Pro, ExtensionPay handles your email address and payment details solely to complete and verify that purchase. We never see or store your card information. Permissions, explained

• storage — to save your summaries, usage count, settings, and plan record locally on your device.
• activeTab — to confirm the tab you are looking at is a YouTube video, so the summarize button can work on it. It is not used to read unrelated tabs or browsing history.
• host access to https://www.youtube.com/* — so the content script can read the public transcript of the video you ask it to summarize and move the player to a timestamp. This is the only site the extension reads.
• host access to https://extensionpay.com/* — required by ExtensionPay to run the anonymous plan check and to handle the optional one-time Pro purchase.

Data retention

Your saved summaries, settings, and plan record stay in your browser until you delete them or remove the extension. Usage counts keep only the 7 most recent days; older days are pruned automatically. Removing the extension or clearing its storage erases everything the extension holds. The anonymous plan record held by ExtensionPay is governed by ExtensionPay's own retention policy.

Children

Video Summaries for YouTube is a general-audience tool and is not directed at children under 13. It does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children.

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new "Last updated" date.
