How it works
Gentle Day runs on two devices. The display is an iPad or iPhone that stays in one place, for the person you care for. It shows the day of the week, the part of the day, the date, the time, what comes next, and a message from you. Your phone is where you plan the day. The two stay in step through your family's own iCloud.
Gentle Day is a clock, a daily schedule and a message from family. It is not a medical device and makes no medical claims.
Try the demo first
On the first screen, tap Try the Demo, then choose The Display or The Caregiver's Phone. The demo uses a sample day on one device. Nothing in it is saved or sent. To leave the caregiver demo, open Settings and tap Leave the Demo.
Setting up the display
- On the iPad or iPhone for the display, install Gentle Day and choose This device is the display.
- Choose a four digit caregiver PIN, one the person using the display will not guess.
- The display's settings open. Give the display a name, such as Kitchen iPad, and tap Done.
The display has no buttons. To reach its settings later, press and hold the top right corner for 3 seconds, then enter the PIN. The PIN is there to prevent accidental changes; it is not a security lock.
Pairing the display with your phone
- On your phone, install Gentle Day, choose This is my phone, and, if you like, enter the name of the person you care for.
- Tap Pair a Display, then Create Link. Send the link to the display, for example in Messages or Mail.
- Open the link on the display. Gentle Day opens and pairs, and shows the day you set up. You can also paste the link in the display's settings, under Pair with a Caregiver's Phone.
Both devices need to be signed in to iCloud. If the display is signed in to a different Apple Account than yours, invite that Apple Account when you send the link, or choose that anyone with the link can join. Pairing is part of Gentle Day Plus.
Changing the day
On your phone, add events for one day, every day or weekdays, and write the message, with a photo if you like. Tap the preview to see the display larger, or at another time of day. The display checks for changes every few minutes, and sooner when iCloud tells it something changed. Under Displays, your phone shows when each display last checked in and whether it has your latest changes.
Times follow the person's own time zone. If you live somewhere else, enter the times as they are where the display is.
Reminders
At the time of an event with a reminder, the display shows a large card with the event, the time and your note, and plays a soft chime. The chime plays again once a minute for the next two minutes, until someone taps OK. If the display was off at an event's time, the card still appears when it comes back within 15 minutes.
Cards and the chime appear while Gentle Day is on screen. In the display's settings, under Reminders, you can also choose notifications, or alarms on iOS 26.1 and later, for when the app is closed or the screen is locked.
Keeping the display in Gentle Day
Guided Access is part of iOS. It keeps the display in Gentle Day, so the person cannot leave the app or open another one by accident. Gentle Day cannot turn it on by itself. To set it up, on the display:
- Turn on Guided Access. Open the Settings app, then Accessibility, then Guided Access. Turn on Guided Access.
- Choose a passcode. Tap Passcode Settings, then Set Guided Access Passcode. Choose one the person will not guess. It can differ from the Gentle Day PIN.
- Open Gentle Day, so the clock is showing.
- Start Guided Access. Press the top or side button three times quickly. On an iPad with a Home button, press the Home button three times.
- Choose the options. Tap Options. Turn off the Sleep/Wake or Side Button so the screen cannot be locked by accident, and turn off Volume Buttons so the chime stays audible. Leave Touch on, so OK on a reminder can be tapped. Then tap Start.
- To stop, press the same button three times again and enter the Guided Access passcode.
Keep the display plugged in; Gentle Day keeps the screen on while it is open. Set the volume high enough to hear the chime from across the room. If the display restarts, open Gentle Day again and start Guided Access again. The same steps are in the app, under Keep Gentle Day on Screen in the display's settings, and under Settings on your phone.
When the internet is down
The display keeps showing the day it has, with its reminders, and picks up your changes when the connection returns. Changes you make on your phone without a connection are kept and sent later.
Free, and Gentle Day Plus
The display never asks for a purchase. Setting up a display by hand, on the display itself, is free. On your phone, planning the day and the preview are free. Gentle Day Plus adds pairing displays, sending your changes to them from wherever you are, and managing who has access.
Gentle Day Plus is a subscription that renews automatically: $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the United States, and the price in your country is shown before you subscribe. Either plan begins with a 7 day free trial if you have not had one. If you cancel during the free trial, you are not charged.
If Plus ends, your displays keep showing what they have, repeating events included. Changes you make on your phone are kept and wait until Plus is active again.
Cancelling or changing your plan
In Gentle Day on your phone, open Settings and choose Manage Subscription. You can also open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period to avoid the next charge; Plus stays on until that period ends.
Restoring your subscription
In Settings on your phone, choose Restore Purchases. Plus returns on an iPhone or iPad signed in to the Apple Account you subscribed with. Refunds for App Store purchases come from Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Removing a display or leaving
On your phone, open a display under Displays to see who has access, and remove anyone. A removed display keeps what it last had until it is set up again. On a display, open its settings and choose Leave the Care Circle.
