Adding an item in one line

The box at the top of a list takes a whole line at once. Type "2 lb chicken thighs" and you get 2, lb, and chicken thighs, in the meat section. It reads pounds, ounces, kilos, grams, litres, millilitres, cups, dozens, packs, bunches, cans, tins, jars, boxes, bags, and each. It also reads halves and fractions, so "2 1/2 cups flour" and "1/2 cup sugar" both work. A name that starts with a number, such as 7 Up or 2% milk, stays a name.

Putting the sections in your shop's order

In More, choose Stores, then a store, and drag the sections into the order you walk them. Each store keeps its own order, so the list follows the shop you are actually standing in. A section with nothing in it is left out of the list.

Shopping mode

Open a list and tap Start shopping. The text is large, the tap targets are big, and the screen stays awake while it is open, so you can hold the phone in one hand and work down the aisles. Leaving shopping mode hands the screen back to the usual sleep setting.

The pantry

Anything you add to a list joins your pantry, with the section, unit, and amount you used. Next time, it comes back already filled in, so adding milk again is one tap. Mark the things you always buy as staples, and a whole set of them can go onto a new list at once.

Sending a list to someone

Open the list's menu and choose Share as text to send it in a message or an email, in the same aisle order you shop in, or Export this list for a CSV file. Local Grocery List has no account and no server, so a list is not shared live between two phones: what you send is a copy, and later changes stay on your own device.

Moving to a new phone

In More, choose Back up everything. Save the file to iCloud Drive or another place you can reach from the new phone. On the new phone, install Local Grocery List, open More, and choose Restore a backup. The backup holds your lists, your pantry, and your stores with their aisle order. It is not locked with a password, so keep it somewhere private.

Free, and Local Grocery List Pro

The free version covers 2 lists at a time, the whole quick add line, section grouping, shopping mode, 50 pantry items, one store, the spreadsheets, and full backup and restore. Local Grocery List Pro adds unlimited lists, an unlimited pantry, several stores each with its own aisle order, staple sets, and prices with an estimated list total. It is a one-time purchase. Your own records are never held back: the spreadsheets and the backup always cover everything, whether or not you have Pro.

Restoring your purchase

In More, choose Restore Purchases. Pro returns on every iPhone or iPad that uses the same Apple Account you bought it with.
