On the App Store, Medical Bills is listed as Medical Bill & EOB Tracker.
Reading an insurance statement
An insurance statement, often called an explanation of benefits or EOB, is not a bill. It shows what the provider billed, the amount your plan allowed, what the plan paid, and the part it says is yours. Enter those four amounts as they appear on the statement.
How the match check works
The app adds up the amount due on every bill for a care entry and compares it with your share on every insurance statement for that entry. If you paid something before the bill was made, such as a copay at the visit, mark that payment as paid before the bill, and the app takes it off the amount the bill should show. Bills and statements marked as replaced are left out. The check compares the numbers you typed. It cannot tell which number is right.
When they do not match
A difference can have an ordinary reason. The bill may have been printed before the insurance payment arrived, a payment may not be applied yet, or the statement may have been corrected. The provider's billing office and your insurance company can tell you. The call log keeps who you spoke with, what they said, and any reference number.
Appeals
If you decide to appeal, mark the care entry as appealing and enter the deadline. Appeal deadlines are set by your health plan, so check your plan documents or your insurance statement for yours. The app reminds you before the date you enter. It does not know your plan's rules.
Reminders
A bill reminds you three days before its due date. A call back reminds you on the day. An appeal deadline reminds you 14 days and 3 days before. Each reminder arrives at 9 in the morning. You can turn reminders off, or let them show names, in More.
Year totals and exports
Totals group care by the date of care, not the date you paid. With Pro, you can share a CSV spreadsheet or a PDF summary for any year. The app does not give tax advice.
Moving to a new phone
Everything is kept on this device, and this version has no backup file of its own. Restoring a device backup made with iCloud or a computer to the new phone brings your entries along. Exports are a record to read or print. The app cannot read them back in.
Restoring your purchase
In More, choose Restore Purchases. Pro returns on every iPhone or iPad that uses the Apple Account you bought it with.
Free, and Medical Bills Pro
The free version keeps up to three care entries for one person, with the match check, reminders, scans and year totals on screen. Medical Bills Pro adds unlimited care entries, family members, the call log, and the CSV spreadsheet and PDF summary. It is a one-time purchase.
