Getting a good photo
Lay the receipt flat on something darker than the paper, in even light, and fill most of the frame with it. The app looks for the edges of the paper and places the four corners for you. If a corner is off, drag it onto the corner of the receipt. Rotate turns the photo a quarter turn. Brightened evens out shadows and fading; Original color leaves the colors untouched. Either way, the photo is straightened and cropped to the receipt.
Why some details are highlighted
After you tap Use, the app reads the text on the receipt, on your device, and suggests the merchant, date, total, tax and tip. Text reading makes mistakes, so each suggested field is highlighted. The highlight goes away when you change that field, or when you close the receipt and open it again, so check each one before you tap Save. If the total looks wrong, the amounts found on the receipt are shown under it; tap the right one. The app looks for a line marked total, amount due or balance due, and never the subtotal. When no such line is found, it says so and suggests the largest amount instead.
A receipt stays marked "Check details" until you tap Save. The text read from the photo is under the form if you want to compare.
Categories, business receipts and search
Choose a category for each receipt, or make your own in More, Categories. Deleting a category moves its receipts to Other. Turn on Business or tax deductible for anything you may claim, then use the Business filter or the Business only option on Totals and exports. Search looks through merchants, notes, payment labels and the text on the receipts themselves.
Different currencies
Each receipt has its own currency. Totals are shown separately for each currency, and nothing is converted or added across currencies.
Getting your receipts out
In More, Export, choose which receipts, then Export CSV for a spreadsheet, or, with Pro, make a PDF expense report with totals and photos. A backup saves everything, photos included, in one file. To move to a new iPhone or iPad, save a backup, open Local Receipts on the new device, and tap Add from a backup. On a device with no receipts yet, your categories and settings come with it. Receipts already on a device are left as they are.
Free, and Local Receipts Pro
CSV export and backups are free. The free version keeps up to 15 receipts. Receipts you already have are never locked, and the limit never stops you restoring a backup. Local Receipts Pro is a one-time purchase that keeps as many as you like and adds PDF reports. It comes back on any device signed in with the same Apple Account: in More, tap Restore purchases.
Camera access
If you said no to the camera earlier, turn it on in Settings, Local Receipts, Camera. You can always choose a photo instead.
What the app does not do yet
It reads English text only. A very long receipt is best taken in one photo from a little further away. Amounts in other currencies are never converted.
